Abstract1: This Digest reviews the history and incidence of problems with metal components in walls, particularly wall ties. It considers problems of corrosion, inadequate provision or poor specification and what action can be taken, particularly where structural stability is threatened. Reinstatment is often feasible and may cost a fraction of the whole rebuilding cost, so methods are suggested. With IP13/90, Digests 329 and 401, and Good Building Guide 29, this Digest offers a package of information on problems and remedial installation of wall ties, straps and fixings into existing walls.
