Abstract1: The sound insulation of masonry cavity walls is partly determined by the number and dynamic stiffness of the wall ties used. Wall ties have a drip to prevent water passing from the outer to the inner leaf which means that their dynamic stiffness cannot be calculated from their dimensions and properties. The stiffness also depends on the width of the cavity. The dynamic stiffness of wall ties therefore needs to be measured experimentally: this paper describes such a measurement procedure.
