Summary:
British Standard document BS 6387:1994 cites the requirements for the performance of cables to maintain circuit integrity under fire conditions. Sections 10 and 11 list the test requirements and the methods for determining fire resistance in any sample of cable. Annex A describes in detail how insulators and protective conductors for any cable sample are tested in water, mandating that the ends of the cable be exposed but above the water line, while slowly increasing the test voltages. Also Annex A states that test voltages are usually four times that of the rated voltage for completed cable. In Annex D are found diagrams and specific instructions on rigging tests for cables resistance to heat/fire with mechanical shock. In the course of this test, a lamp is used with one terminal post on the neutral conductor or any metallic layer and the other on the phase conductor.
