Summary:
British Standard EN ISO 9241-5:1999 (BS EN ISO 9241-5:1999) outlines the ergonomic requirements for workplaces using visual display terminals (VDTs), specifically for workstation layout and postural requirements. This is the English language version of EN ISO 9241-5:1999, which is identical with ISO 9241-5:1998. It supersedes BS 7179-5:1990, and has the status of a European Standard. Selection of anthropometric data sets, which should be representative of a group closely related to the intended user population, including allowances for clothing and “slump factor”, is discussed. Support for postural changes by movement of back rest and seat-pan is illustrated. Figure A.1 identifies important anthropometric dimensions for determining design of sitting and standing VDT workplaces.
