BS 6883 details construction, dimension, mechanical and electrical property requirements for fixed wiring. Fixed wiring includes lighting, power, control, instrumentation and propulsion circuits in ships and on mobile and fixed offshore units. Wiring can be elastomer insulated, individually screened pairs, sheathed and steel or bronze wire braided. Cables can be pairs, triples, quads, single-core and multicore. This document also includes a required schedule of tests, test conditions and visual examination of completed cable and components. Some of the tests detailed are heating cycle, voltage, insulation resistance and bending tests. There are also recommendations in this Standard for the selection and insulation of cables.
