Summary:
This British Standard gives the general dimensions and tolerances of precision hexagon bolts, screws and nuts with ISO metric threads in diameters from 1.6 mm to 68 mm and covers mechanical properties of carbon or alloy steel bolts, screws and nuts. Standard nominal lengths, defined as the distance from the underside of the head to the extreme end of the shank, including any chamfer or radius, are provided in Table 8. Preferred nominal lengths are given in Annex D. Strength grade designations of steel bolts and screws are described in accordance with BS EN ISO 898-1. The strength grade designation system (property class symbol) consists of (1) the minimum tensile strength, and (2) the minimum yield stress and the minimum tensile strength. The axis of the thread of the nut shall be square to the face of the nut, as stated in Table 6 (column 9). Normative references to Metallic materials tested according to the Brinell hardness test method can be found in the following documents: BS EN ISO 6506-1:1999, BS EN ISO 6506-2:1999, and BS EN ISO 6506-3:1995. Normative documents BS EN ISO 6507-1:1998, BS EN ISO 6507-2:1998, and BS EN ISO 6507-3:1998 contain provisions of the British standard for Vickers hardness test. ISO metric precision bolts, screws and nuts enquiries or orders require the following: nominal size (thread diameter), nominal length in millmetres (bolts and screws only), and the appropriate British Standard. Orders for drilled bolts with split pin holes must state dimension lp; holes will be drilled through the centre of the bolt as specified in BS EN ISO 1234. Preferred and non-preferred sizes for ISO metric precision hexagon bolts and screws are provided in Table 5.
