Summary:
BS IEC 61511-3 details the concept of risk and its relationship to safety integrity, tolerable risk determination and different methods which enable the safety integrity levels for safety instrumented functions. This document is intended to be used when one or more safety instrumented functions are used for the protection of personnel, the general public, or the environment and may be implemented in non-safety applications. BS IEC 61511-3 also defines normal hazard and risk assessment methods that may be employed to etermine requirements and safety integrity levels for safety instrumented functions as well as techniques and measures to determine required safety integrity levels. A framework is given for the establishment of safety integrity levels. It does not establish requirements for specific applications, nor does it give example requirements for other methods of risk reduction.
