Summary:
BS EN 50020 documents the construction and testing of intrinsically safe apparatus connected to intrinsically safe circuits. The standards discussed apply to both apparatus used in and out of potentially explosive atmospheres. The construction and protection of apparatus is determined by the safety factor of the source of power, temperature, spark ignitions, voltage and current. In constructing safe apparatus and associative apparatus, this document identifies safe enclosure for conductive parts and creepage distances in air. Also detailed in this document are methods for determining creepage distances through casting compounds and solid insulation, rules for using spark test apparatus and temperature classification of components in ambient temperature.
